With 80mph gales toppling trees, closing bridges and cutting power to thousands, it was a turbulent start to the year for many parts of the country. Unfortunately, extreme weather and climate-related disasters are on an unmistakably upward trend in the UK.

The Met Office reported that the area hardest hit by the January gales was southern Scotland, where winds reached 81mph - the worst storms in 13 years - but weather related disasters can strike anytime and anywhere.
