Avon fire service first to use ESRI risk assessment

08 February 2010

Avon is the UK's first fire and rescue service to deploy geographical information services (GIS)from ESRI that will significantly improve the safety for its fire-fighters and the public at major fires

ESRI's GIS–driven data capture solution, called DragonMap, will enable the fire and rescue service to accurately conduct risk assessment surveys of larger buildings and facilities, also known as 7(2)d risk assessments. The system will enable them to quickly capture key data, such as construction materials employed or entry/exit points, adding the information to digital maps held on ruggedised laptops.

On return to base, this information will then be electronically transferred into ESRI's ArcView GIS, enabling Avon Fire and Rescue Service to share the information across the organisation and with other crews in neighbouring areas.

Avon's future plan is to further expand their use of GIS systems from ESRI (UK) to incorporate location-based intelligence on the region's critical infrastructure, such as power networks, open water supplies, drainage and fire hydrants.
