Before and after 9/11 literary conference
Changes to American literature and cultural representations before and after 9/11 are to be explored in a one-day conference on 18 Jun,e hosted by the Centre for American Studies and the School of English at the University of Leicester
'Before and after 9/11: American Literature and Culture' is taking place at the University of Leicester on Friday 18 June from 9.30am and features a collection of speakers investigating the changing priorities, themes and the impact of visual culture on American writing as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Professor Liam Kennedy, Director of the Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College Dublin will be delivering the keynote speech, 'Seeing and Believing: On Photography and Post-9/11 Visual Culture' and 18 other international academics will be speaking on topics including: 'The Falling Man', 'Otherness after 9/11' and 'Reimagining 9/11'.
Event organiser and University Tutor, Dr Emma Kimberley commented: "The conference will explore the perceptions of self and other and how these have changed since 9/11, as well as looking at how 9/11 and the War on Terror have impacted on issues such as race, national identity, religion and visual culture . The focus will be on how the literary world has changed as a result of 9/11.
