CBI: UK needs a balanced mix of energy sources
The CBI today commented on Project Discovery, Ofgem's review of Britain's energy supplies. In July 2009 the CBI published its blueprint for a secure and sustainable energy future, based on analysis by McKinsey & Company, called 'Decision Time: Driving the UK towards a sustainable energy future '
John Cridland, CBI Deputy-Director General, said: "The best way of delivering energy security, meeting our climate change targets and keeping prices affordable is by ensuring the UK develops a balanced mix of energy sources that includes wind and other renewables, nuclear, gas and clean coal.
"In July we published research showing that around £150bn of private sector investment will be needed to deliver this balanced energy mix. To achieve this we need a major shift in current government policy, which is incentivising wind power at the expense of other forms of low-carbon investment.
"Firms need to be able to invest in new energy infrastructure with confidence. That's why we need to see the National Planning Statements published as soon as possible, as well as regulatory frameworks and funding arrangements for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration plants."
