Former Home Secretary to speak at CNi Expo
Former Home Secretary, Dr John Reid, and Sir David Veness, the former UN Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, are among expert speakers at CNi Expo, ExCel, June 2nd and 3rd
As natural disasters and non-terror threats continue to dominate the headlines, the resilience of the UK's infrastructure has recently been put to the test. With Icelandic volcanic ash bringing UK air transport to a complete and unprecedented standstill, fundamental flaws in the nation's most critical networks have been exposed. The need for an extensive backup plan has never been more urgent.
Confronting these issues, as well as other potential threats to the UK's Critical National Infrastructure, CNi Expo will feature a key programme of panels and seminars, delivered by over 60 leading industry experts and devised to meet the growing concerns, raised by many of today's security professionals.
Introducing debate alongside former Home Secretary the Rt. Hon. Dr John Reid, Sir David Veness/Former Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, Department of Safety and Security, United Nations will examine whether Countries Need to do Much More to Ensure Security and Resilience. Identifying the emerging vulnerabilities within crucial areas of the national infrastructure, Sir David Veness said that "the UK should also consider carefully the non-UK dimension and use every opportunity to learn from situations which have occurred in other countries. CNi Expo will provide a perfect opportunity to address the UK's current susceptibility to both man-made and natural disasters".
It is estimated that there are over one million computer viruses currently in circulation, with the government sector identified as responsible for highest 'identity exposure' following the loss of personal information from its databases. Emphasising the importance of securing corporate and governmental, as well as personal, computer networks against these ongoing attacks Dr Robert Ghanea-Hercock, Chief Researcher Security Practice Centre, BT Innovate & Design will provide a comprehensive overview of the technology currently driving innovation in this field. "The coming decade will see significant growth in sophisticated and well resourced cyber attacks against critical assets and networks", Dr Ghanea-Hercock explained. "CNi Expo offers an ideal forum for the essential dialogue needed between the commercial, academic and government sectors, to combat these emerging threats."
Defending the UK from the rapidly increasing risk of Cyber Attack is another issue which will be openly analysed at CNi. Bringing the issue to the forefront of debate, Paul Dawkins B.Sc. (Hons), MBCS Managing Director, Iron Ox Ltd will examine the potential catastrophic impact that computer generated warfare could have on the National Infrastructure.
Other key areas introduced into discussion include Security as a Positive Force in Business, led by Niall MacGinnis of Diageo on Thursday 3rd June 2010 14:00 – 14:50, while Rachel Briggs the Director of Hostage UK will explore the complexities of Dealing With Unpredictable Threats on Wednesday 2nd June 16:20 – 17:10. Reflecting the vast array of issues which are encompassed in the UK's critical national infrastructure, Hostage UK will address the importance of supporting a family during a kidnap scenario – and the practical role that employers and the government have in understanding and realising these needs.
"Protective security is about working together in partnership – owners, operators, advisers, suppliers, service providers, researchers can all help to make a difference" says Liz Siberry, Director Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, "I am looking forward to speaking at this event and hope that many of you who are involved or interested in the UK's critical national infrastructure will be able to attend".
More than 60 leading experts from across the spectrum of security and resilience are lined up to speak at Critical National Infrastructure Expo (CNi Expo), the innovative new event that throws a fresh and challenging light on the implications of threats to the national infrastructure.
