GSM cell site in a backpack

24 April 2010

Visitors to the Ericsson stand at London's BAPCO Exhibition will be treated to the unveiling of the Ericsson Rapid Response GSM backpack, designed for immediate short term use to complement existing telecommunications solutions

Emergency Services globally recognize the impact on speed of recovery in a disaster should all communications channels be knocked out and this has brought communications deployment high on the agenda in crisis planning.

Weighing only 8kgs/17.6lbs, the backpack is specifically designed for mobility allowing the wearer to carry it into a disaster recovery environment and set up a fully operational GSM cell site within as little as 15 minutes.

In the event of a crisis, whether manmade or natural disaster, where all communications channels are knocked out, the backpack network can be deployed as a portable extension of a GSM mobile network interconnected by a satellite link either to a closed user group – a fire brigade or police unit for example, or as an extension of an existing operator network.

"The Ericsson Rapid Response GSM backpack is designed as an immediate disaster recovery emergency response solution with no special training required by the user. Once in the required location it can be put on the ground and almost instantly a mini-GSM network can be deployed and communication established simply by using the regular handheld devices, said Richard Swardh, Director of Business Development, Ericsson.
