HSE export and import of dangerous chemicals website

07 December 2009

Some businesses in Great Britain with duties under Biocidal Products Directive 98/8/EC are also involved in the export or import of restricted or banned chemicals to or from outside of (sic) the EU

Those responsible for this trade may be subject to the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 689/2008 concerning the export and import of dangerous chemicals. This regulation implements the Rotterdam Convention on the international trade in certain dangerous chemicals and places an export ban on the persistent organic pollutants listed in the Stockholm Convention.

Most of the chemicals involved are used in biocides and/or pesticide applications, for example, nonylphenol ethoxylate. Other chemicals you may use in formulations may be affected such as those restricted under other EU legislation such as REACH (Annex XVII), for example nonyl phenols.
