IT Directors' Disaster Recovery & Availability Summit
The third annual IT Directors' Disaster Recovery & Availability Summit took place in London on January 20 and again it was received enthusiastically and received positive comment from delegates, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors alike
With over 140 delegates attending, it featured presentations from names including Robin Gaddum MBCI, Head of BCM Professional Services, Richard Maddison, Head of BCM, FSA, Dr. Nigel Brown, Director of Resilient Telecommunications Strategy, Civil Contingencies Secretariat, Cabinet Office and Bernie Budworth, Head of BCP, QVC.
The presentations were thoughtful and informative, combined with case studies and all displaying the serious and sometimes amusing side of disaster recovery. Robin Gaddum, for example, chose to use a recent programme called "The Secret Life of Chaos" as his focus showing how chaos and order were inter-related - a presentation which solicited much interaction; Richard Maddision discussed whether there should be a more intrusive approach to regulation – again an issue which encouraged much debate, whilst Julian Thrussell from the BSI revealed that in 2009 whilst 52% of businesses had management continuity plans in place, 42% of those did not have business continuity for IT.....
To endorse the success of the event, testimonials from delegates included comments such as "The depth of experience from the chair and speakers was excellent. The opportunity for network was excellent." Peter Morris, Debenhams and "Many congratulations on an excellent conference – the range of presentations was very impressive and the organisation of the event went like clockwork." Mark Barker, BSc (Hons) MRICS, Director, BGG Associates and "Robin Gaddum's presentation was 'off the beaten path' and was quite thought provoking, and Marc Power's very personal experiences very resonant. They both highlight that complacency should be guarded against, and that no matter how well you plan there will always be something that can confound the best planning... that's the nature of chaotic events." Martin Willis, Gartmore Investment Management.
As part of ITDR 2010, a series of six white papers were produce in the run-up to the event with a final paper produced as a result of questions asked at the conference. TRICKS gave registrants an inside track of tools and techniques to solve the challenges for the industry. Each topic was addressed by a panel of experts.
TRICKS
Technical evolution; cloud computing, latency, dispersion, compaction
Regulation, contractual obligation and compliance
Information security: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability
Cost during recession: outsourcing and right-sourcing
Kollaboration Integration, dependencies and supply chain continuity
Sustainability: Green computing
The final paper is based on comments, questions and solutions that were presented during the conference including "Do you have a burning issue?", "What would you like to know for reassurance about a strategy you are undertaking?" and "Who do you want to compare and contrast with in order to learn from their experience?"
All white papers are now available to download for free from www.it-dr.com
