Iron Mountain: ICO needs power to impose fines

01 July 2009

Commenting on the appointment of a new Information Commissioner, Gordon Brockington, of Iron Mountain UK, said the post required more than the power to slap wrists

Mr Brockington, Director, Public Sector, Iron Mountain UK said: "The way government treats the issue of data protection and information management has improved dramatically since the creation of the post of Information Commissioner.

"With legislative advances and the explosion in the amounts of data traded and stored on a daily basis, the position of Information Commissioner has become an increasingly integral part of the government furniture.

"To be truly effective I have been arguing that the post requires more than the power to slap wrists. FSA style fines are surely the only real way to ensure that we can be as compliant as we can be."
