Mission to make UAE world's safest & securest country
Fire is a huge safety concern. Off late, we have heard about fire accidents taking place across the world - fire at two labour camps in Oman, Villagio mall fire caused by faulty wiring also in Oman, a fire at a 42-storey tower in Sharjah and fire accident at Naresco site both in UAE are the few accidents that have shaken the entire Middle East. Fire can kill many people on the spot. Emergencies and disasters can occur any time without warning. The more you are prepared for them, the better you will be able to act, minimising panic and confusion when any such accident occurs.
According to the investigations by General Headquarters of Civil Defense, UAE, two major causes of fire are electric contact and sources of combustion. The failure to meet preventive safety requirements to carry out regular checks and tests of firefighting systems and equipment leads to major accidents. Civil Defense has initiated and implemented several social programs and campaigns with the aim to raise people's awareness whilst ensuring protection from dangerous fire accidents. "We have adopted advanced scientific and highly efficient approaches that are based upon self-abilities of civil defense department and set specific objectives for each national campaign within certain time frame," elaborated His Excellency Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, Acting Director General, Department of Civil Defense.
National campaign adopted by UAE's Civil Defense for home safety that targeted 50% of houses at the first stage aims to remove violations threatening public safety and raise preventive awareness among the people. The duration of this campaign was six months, where 206,490 out of 336,322 houses were visited and were distributed 1,314,940 leaflets and brochures across the UAE.
In order to conduct the inspection, teams from Civil Defense have been formed across the UAE with the target of visiting 50% of houses in the first phase of the campaign, evaluating their level of safety and creating awareness among family members. The campaign was characterized by close cooperation and constructive initiatives on the part of house owners and community authorities as well. The rate of satisfaction among house owners amounted to 92% according to the questionnaire signed by them.
National campaign for safety in industrial areas targeted removing violations against industrial companies and raising awareness among their workers or employees. This campaign took three months during which civil defense teams visited 29,057 companies and removed violations against 9,711 across all industrial areas in the country. In addition, 84,166 counseling brochures have been disseminated to describe the objectives of the campaign to all those concerned with the companies.
673 officers and several civilians working at Civil Defense participated in the survey with 123 field teams distributed to 98 jurisdiction sectors, geographically allocated across the UAE. Thereafter, nearly 63,745 employees have been registered for training on basic skills to fire protection.
According to the preliminary statistics for the first six months following implementation of such campaigns, it was discovered that the fire accidents in residential and industrial areas were curbed by 32% and 28% respectively.
To further give thrust to the awareness against fire accidents and increase knowledge about fire safety, United Arab Emirates Directorate General of Civil Defense - Dubai UAE, joins hand with Fleming Gulf to support the 3rd Annual Middle East Fire Safe 2012 scheduled to take place on 24 – 26 September at JW Marriot Dubai.
