New Salford course on ethical counter-terrorism
A pioneering new course in terrorism studies has been launched by the University of Salford to help train the counter-terrorist and human rights campaigners of the future with a unique blend of politics and ethical studies
The MA Terrorism and Security will address the growing demand for people who are knowledgeable in the methods and aims of terrorists and the ways in which agencies around the world attempt to counter them.
At the same time students will also learn to critically examine the responses to terrorism such as detention without trial, and discuss their effectiveness from historical examples - the first time such a blend of politics, sociology and history has been used in the UK.
Tutors believe that the broad range of topics will make the course ideal for those who are in, or want to be in, the police, military, civil service or non-governmental organisations.
The need for increased anti-terrorist capacity is particularly acute in Greater Manchester, which is now a regional hub for anti-terrorism and has an expanding police unit to deal with acts of terror.
Course leader, Dr Christian Kaunert said: "We know this is an expanding area of study and Salford already has a recognised expertise in the subject. In addition, to help us develop this course we've had input form Greater Manchester Police.
"But this isn't simply about knowing how to defeat terrorists, but also about analysing the civil liberty implications of how governments seek to deal with threats. We want to develop a fully rounded knowledge of this ever-increasing phenomenon."
