Russian spys divert MI5 resources
Jonathan Evans, the Director General of the Security Service, gave a speech at the Society of Editors' conference in Manchester on 5 November 2007 in which he provided an update on the terrorist threat and spoke about the need for perseverance and strategic thinking in our efforts to counter the threat from international terrorism
Mr. Evans highlighted the need to protect young people from radicalisation and indoctrination by violent extremists, and also remarked on the unfortunate diversion of key resources away from vital counter-terrorist work by ongoing Russian espionage activity in the UK.
He discussed the nature of the threat from international terrorism, noting that it was the product of an extremist ideology that was becoming an increasing problem in a number of different countries. He explained how MI5 has changed to improve its ability to counter international terrorism but warned that there will never be certainty that all terrorist plots can be averted.
