Irish Coast Guard to host major search & rescue conference in Ireland Italian Coast Guard to make presentation on Costa Concordia incident
A major international conference on search & rescue will take place later this year in Killiney, and is being organised by the Irish Coast Guard.
The conference will bring Coast Guard representatives from across Europe, along with a range of other search & rescue experts.
One of the keynote presentations will be from the Italian Coast Guard, who are attending in order to discuss the recent tragic sinking of the Costa Concordia.
This is the first time that the conference has been held in Ireland. Dublin was chosen as a venue in order to mark the fact that Ireland is heading up the European Union Heads of Coast Guard. The Director of the Irish Coast Guards, Chris Reynolds, is currently chairing the organisation.
Coast guard chiefs from a number of countries will be attending, including the UK and Sweden. All four Coast Guard helicopters will be on hand to give a search & rescue demonstration at the conference.
Mr Reynolds has been asked specifically to prepare the ground for a permanent Secretariat, manned by Coast Guard Officers from Member States, the EU Commission and various agencies.
This Secretariat is meeting in Dublin later this year, and Mr Reynolds will propose to have the Secretariat based in Dublin on a permanent basis. This initiative has been backed by Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar.
