Somali pirate captain blames foreign fishing boats

25 April 2009

In an interview on Al Arabiya TV, Somali pirate captain, Mr Geography, blamed the collapse of the Somali regime and the unfettered fishing by foreigners as the reasons for piracy

When interviewed on Al Arabiya TV, the reputed leader of the pirates, a Mr Boyah, known also as Mr Geography because he had excelled in this subjext at school, said: "We used to be regular fishermen. Since the collapse of the Somali regime, foreign trawlers have plundered our marine livelihood and have destroyed our boats. When we tried to approach them, they opened fire on us. These problems drove us to take this action. It was the Puntland (the Somali region) authorities that allowed the foreign trawlers to rob us of our marine livelihood. As long as no solution is found to this problem, the number of pirates will rise, month by month."
