US to 'roast' Afghan crowds with microwaves

22 June 2010

The U.S. military has deployed an Active Denial System - also known as pain-ray system - to Afghanistan, although no decision has yet been made on whether and how to use it; the weapon beams enemy soldiers - or unruly crowds - with an intense beam which makes them feel as if they are being roasted alive

The U.S. military apparently is testing an Active Denial System in Afghanistan. The military believes that the generally non-lethal microwave weapon is a better, safer crowd control alternative than an M-16. Noah Shachtman writes, though, that ray-gun advocates better think long and hard about the Taliban's propaganda bonanza when news leaks of the Americans zapping Afghans until they feel roasted alive.
