Yellow River flood threat
22 February 2010
Thousands of people in China's Shandong and Henan provinces living on the lower reaches of the Yellow River are desperately waiting to be relocated from the floodplains to higher ground, as promised by local authorities
About 2,000 villages lie within levees of the Yellow River, a waterway that has altered course many times throughout history. The relocation plans have been dogged by delays, say residents, who blamed a dispute between villagers and officials over whether people actually want to move, and wrangles about potential land exchange and compensation packages.
Floods devastated the area in 1949, 1958, 1976 and 1996.
